Hemispherical (hemicycle) sundials by Jang Yeong-sil

Description.
The prototype of this tool is bronze hemicycle sundials made in the 15th century in Korea and stored now in the Gyeongbokgung Palace, Seoul. The author of the prototype is a Korean scientist and astronomer Jang Yeong-sil. The instrument is made in a technique of Russian white stone carvings and is the result of the author's transformation of Korean culture and science of the 15th century into modern Russian culture, which, at least in respect of white stone carvings, is still strongly influenced by Byzantine tradition. The hemicycle bowl together with legs-stands is carved from a single block of stone. Massive leg-stands are decorated with stylized 216 pearls. On friezes of the stand leaves and stalks of bamboo are carved.
