Take an Atlantic herring (Clupea harengus harengus Linnaeus, 1758) weighing 0.5 kg, three potatoes, onion, two eggs, two beets and two pickled cucumbers.

Boil potatoes, beets and eggs. As long as they are cooked, cut herring in two parts and remove the backbone and small bones.

Remove the skin.

Cut the herring into cubes no more than 10 x 10 mm.

Place the first layer of herring cubes.

The second layer consists of the cut onion.

Chop boiled potatoes with a grater and add mayonnaise.

The next layer consists of grated beets and pickles.

Add chopped egg whites.

Add mayonnaise.

Put a few more layers of potatoes, beets and mayonnaise. Sprinkle egg yolks on the top.

Garnish with herbs.

Serve cold with a gnomon. Enjoy!
