Usually vertical sundials are placed on the walls. If a sundial is located high above the ground it should be large enough to be visible from below.
Vertical sundial can be placed on any wall. However, it is important to know that the orientation of any building wall is unique. Therefore, the hour lines on a sundial depend on the azimuth of the wall and should be calculated to fit the azimuth. In the northern climate, the preferred technique for making a vertical sundial is mosaic, glazed pottery and stone carving.
